The Chelsea home match was the real sickener for me. Neil fucking Orr getting outjumped by Pat Nevin for the winner.

I was at University in London in '86 and spent most of my time out of my nut and/or in the bookies and the only game i went to that season was Chelsea v Liverpool with a couple of bin-dippers.

Was having a great day on the piss and having backed a double of 0-0 and Dancing Brave to win the 2000 Guineas and then that cunt Dalglish rocked up and pissed on my bonfire. Being in with them when that goal went in was one of the worst experiences of my life, not even a skinful could dull the pain.

Re: How does this season compare to 86?
The first televised game was us v Charlton away in the FA Cup and Cottee scored late on in a 1-0 win. Macca chipped the keeper and Cottee ran in to make sure it went in. The Man U game was early Feb. I think the main difference was in that season we had hardly any injuries and I think we only used about 17 players all in. Something like that anyway. We also had a prolific front two where as this year the goals are more spread about. I was 18 in the 1985-6 season and I really think we would have won the league if it wasn't for the fixture congestion. We were quite simply awesome and the 4-0 drubbing of Chelsea at the Bridge was particularly pleasing. Cottee had two and we were three nil up. The Shed were all chanting that McAvennie was a wanker and Cottee tried an audacious volley and sliced it into Maccas path and without breaking stride he volleyed it into the top corner to make it four and shut the mugs right up. Quality times. This does not feel the same to me as we are not in the title mix really although we can only pray for a miracle. Back then it was a reality that got dashed on the last weekend. Still, great times to be a Hammer, rosy looking future and a team and manager to be proud of. Lets hope we get CL and the F.A. Cup. COYI

I was 14 in 1986 and saw nearly every home match, and a few London away ones too. Will never forgive that cunt Tony Woodcock for handballing it to score at Highbury when we lost 1-0.

Re: How does this season compare to 86?
You really have to appreciate how good both Liverpool and Everton were back then, they weren't just two of the best teams in this country but two of the best across Europe.

The fact we nearly won it was amazing, it would be like Leicester doing what are now when Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal were at their pomp a decade or so ago.

The only slight comparison currently is probably Manchester City and if they won their last 12 games which truth they should have been capable of they would almost likely win the title, as that will not happen one of Leicester or Spurs can and probably will the title this season.

While 86 might be the 'better' season, I think this season could be a bigger achievement, considering how much football has changed and been weighted in favour of 'Big' clubs.

Oh, and Ray Stewat had balls of steel, scoring so many crucial penalties.

This season, he wouldn't have had the opportunity because no cunt will award us one.

Re: How does this season compare to 86?
1986 was more like what Leicester must be feeling now, except we had to contend with Everton and a Liverpool side who won something like the last 12 games, and suffered from fixture congestion at the end of the season.

I've had a look at some of the clips on you tube, and I can't believe how good Devonshire was. I can't remember him ever losing the ball, although he must have. To think he had come back from that injury that could have finished his career. Simply amazing.

It's difficult comparing to eras though. We were lucky that we only had to use about 16 player that season. As a squad, we are much better now.

Well in 86 I was a blooming stud and now I'm a worn out old goat, not too unlike Frankie Mac.

Re: How does this season compare to 86?
I think the big difference is that Liverpool were the dominant team and this season theres 6 teams in with a shout and 2 of those teams are rank outsiders.

Interms of the team...Payet is Alan Devonshire, Antonio is Ward but weve had no one striker to bank them in a la Frank Macavennie.

collins is Alvin Martin, Cresswell Ray Stewart and Adrian playing Parks role well.

Billy bonds was missing for the whole of 86 but Noble is the home grown man Bomds wouldve been that season.

John Lyall was Mr West Ham, loved that guy and I can see similaties with him and Slaven, good counter attacks, a love for the club and the hope of maybe just maybe itll happen.

Re: How does this season compare to 86?
As said two prolific strikers TC and Macca are the difference. Also you had to win it as runners up was not remembered as such, although it looked on at one point, you always knew Liverpool were almost impossible to unseat European winners with Dalglish and Rush. I think they won the double that year also, seemed like most years then. I remember similar in 81 after giving them two good games in the LCF replay at Villa Park Dalglish nipping in a chipping over Parkes for the winner.

Re: How does this season compare to 86?
Leicester are on target for 79pts (well, 78.62), but Tottenham will get 72pts if they carry on raking them in at the current rate.

So 76pts would have seen us second this year, if things stay the same for the rest of the season (they won't, of course)

Re: How does this season compare to 86?
Liverpool beat us at Anfield, but they needed a massive helping hand from the ref, who not only bought a Paul Walsh dive in the penalty box, but sent off Ray Stewart for dissent.

My feeling was that we were going to beat them until that point.

If all the other results had gone the same way as they actually did, but we had got the win at Anfield we deserved, we would have been Champions, with 87 points, pipping Everton with 86 and Liverpool with 85.

Everyone else was miles behind.

The last 9 League games this time are going to have to be pretty good to match 1986.
